About

Born in 1939,James Crouch gained entry to Cardiff College of Art and pursued his studies from 1957 - 1962 during which time he gained his degree and completed a Post Graduate Year at Cardiff University.

He then moved to Yorkshire where he taught art and continued painting, including teaching in the evenings at H.M.P. Everthorpe, a maximum security Borstal.

In 1967, he moved to Cornwall where he taught whilst exhibiting in a number of galleries around the country. In 1972 he was appointed as the Head of Creative Studies Faculty in a large Community College where he worked until retiring . This has now allowed him more time to devote to the development of his own work.

He uses a variety of media, which reflects the use of strong bold images developed from a personal response to the environment, his emotions and experiences.

His painting technique exploits the use of colour and texture applied in a vigorous yet controlled manner to achieve form and structure. Consequently the subjects are far ranging, embracing landscape, figurative, abstract and symbolic images of an individual nature. This provides the onlooker the opportunity of seeing the familiar and not so familiar with fresh emphasis.
